feta appetizer Ingredients
- 1 8 ounce block of feta cheese, preferably reduced fat, cut into 16 1″ pieces. Reduced fat feta typically has a bit more protein and of course is lower in calories.
- 2 small mini cucumbers, like Persian cucumbers, sliced thinly into 32 pieces.
- Seedless watermelon, 32 1″ cubes.
- Mint leaves, about 16-32 depending on their size. If the leaves are very large, you can cut in half.
- Tajin seasoning, to sprinkle on top right before serving.
Why we Love this nourishing watermelon appetizer
- Watermelon and cucumber are over 90% water, helping with hydration and fullness without a lot of calories.
- Watermelon provides vitamin C, vitamin A, and has more lycopene than any other fresh fruit or vegetable.
- Feta cheese adds a dose of protein and calcium, supporting muscles and bone health. It also brings a satisfying salty flavor that helps with portion control.
Prepping and Assembling
Watermelon and feta skewers are a no-cook recipe that whip up in a matter of minutes and can be made in advance (just hold the Tajin), making them the perfect choice for your next party.
Prep the watermelon
Begin by prepping the watermelon. Cut in half, then carve off the skin and rind, making sure to get off as much of the white parts as possible. Cut into 32 cubed slices that will be about 1″ squared. Also, thinly slice the cucumbers into 32 coins.
cube the feta
Prep the feta by slicing in half length wise, then cutting into similar 1″ size cubes to match the dimensions of the watermelon. Make sure the feta is not too cold, or it may crumble a bit when slicing and skewering.
assemble watermelon skewers
Assemble each skewer by placing a mint leaf on the end (if large, cut and fold in half), then adding a cube of watermelon, a slice of cucumber, and very carefully skewer the block of feta cheese. Slide on one more cucumber slice, one more watermelon cube and finish with another mint leaf. Set on a serving platter.
A sprinkle of Tajin
Right before serving, sprinkle on a bit of Tajin, leaving out a small bowl with additional seasoning for guests to season to their liking!
tips and swaps for this easy watermelon appetizer
- Make sure the feta cheese is not super cold, right out of the fridge, before skewering. When the feta is *too* cold, it may crumble a bit when sliced or skewered. So make sure when assembling the watermelon skewers, the feta cheese has been setting out for about 10-15 minutes.
- Sprinkle minutes before serving! The salt from the Tajin draws the water content from the watermelon and feta to the surface. Eventually, this will result in the skewers becoming too watery, so make sure to sprinkle on the Tajin right before serving. And don’t worry, they’ll get eaten so quickly they won’t have time to sweat 😉
- A couple of fun ingredient swaps include swapping the basil for the mint, and instead of Tajin, drizzle on store-bought balsamic glaze.

- Prep the feta cheese by cutting the block in half lengthwise, and then carefully cutting into 16 1" cubes. Make sure the cheese isn't frigidly cold, as it may not slice cleanly and may fall apart a bit.8 ounces Feta cheese
- Begin assembling each watermelon feta skewer by placing a mint leaf on the end, then adding a cube of watermelon, a slice of cucumber, and very carefully skewer the block of feta cheese. Slide on one more cucumber slice, one more watermelon cube and finish with a mint leaf. Set on a serving platter. Note that if you have a very large mint leaf, cut it in half and then fold it down so it fits neatly on the watermelon appetizer.16-32 Mint leaves
- Once all 16 skewers are assembled, and right before serving, sprinkle with Tajin. Make sure to do this right before serving, as the salt from the Tajin will make the watermelon and feta "sweat" a bit and the appetizer could become too watery.
